THE RESEARCHER MAGAZINE / PROCESS
How we work

You do not need to write a magazine article, become a designer, or run a communications campaign: that is what we are here for.
You bring the research and first-hand perspective, and our specialist team turns that into a thoughtfully written, beautifully designed feature, then publishes and promotes it to audiences beyond your field.
The process is designed to minimise demands on your time, while keeping you involved where your expertise matters most.
THE PROCESS
01
You tell us what matters
Whether you contact us or we approach you about your work, we begin by understanding your research, who you would like to reach and what you hope to achieve. A published paper, project link or short overview is a useful starting point for us to get a flavour of your work, rather than requiring a detailed communications brief.
02
We shape a plan together
We set out what we will create, how it will be published and promoted, the proposed timeline and cost. We also agree the review stages and what your impact report will cover, so you know what is included before commissioning the work. Where you have an institutional communications team, we can coordinate with them too.
03
We develop your story
Our writers and analysts work through the relevant papers and supporting material, asking focused questions to understand the context, findings, limitations and people behind the research.
We then shape that material into an accessible feature, typically four to six pages long. Your knowledge and perspective guide the story; our job is to make it clear and engaging without losing its scientific rigour.
04
You review, we refine
You review the draft to ensure that the science is accurate, the emphasis is appropriate, and your perspective is represented faithfully. We work through your feedback and refine the article together.
This is a collaboration, not a handover of writing duties. We do the drafting and editing, while maintaining clear standards around evidence, sources and uncertainty.
05
We bring it to life
Once the text is agreed, our designers and illustrators develop the layout and any visual material, helping readers navigate the ideas and connect with your work. You review the finished feature and approve the final representation of your research before publication.
06
We publish it in two ways
Your feature is published as an individual article with its own standalone PDF, and included in an edition of The Researcher magazine. This means you have a dedicated publication to share, as well as a place within a wider collection of research stories.
Both are free for readers to access. We provide the publication links and final files for you and your communications team to share within the agreed permissions.
07
We help it reach people
Publication is the starting point for distribution, not the end of the project. We promote both the magazine and your individual feature, giving audiences different ways to discover the work.
Our communications and social media team delivers the agreed campaign. Depending on its scope, this can include tailored social content, paid promotion and public relations activity. We agree the channels, assets and campaign commitments in advance, rather than assuming the same approach suits every project.
08
We show you the impact
At the end of the agreed campaign, you receive an impact report showing what we created, where it was published and promoted, and the audience response recorded.
This can include reach, views, engagement, clicks and downloads where those measures are available. We distinguish paid and organic activity and explain what the figures measure, giving you a clear account of the communication work delivered and its results.
YOUR ROLE

Your role in brief
Share the relevant research, answer our questions and review the work at the agreed stages. We handle the writing, editing, design, publication and campaign delivery. You remain closely involved without having to manage every part of the process yourself.
