THE RESEARCHER MAGAZINE / ABOUT
About The Researcher

Research shapes our health, our choices and the world we live in. Understanding it should not depend on a scientific qualification or the ability to pay.
Our ambition is to connect science with society, helping it travel beyond academic circles and reach millions of people who might otherwise never encounter it. The Researcher brings this knowledge closer to the people it matters to, through thoughtful, human-crafted articles developed with the researchers themselves.
Health and healthcare are at the heart of our coverage, alongside wider scientific research that helps us to make sense of our lives and the world around us. We are here for anyone who wants to understand the work being done, why it matters and what it might mean for them.
OUR APPROACH
Giving researchers a voice
Behind a research paper are people asking difficult questions, testing ideas and trying to understand something important.
We believe those people should have a voice in how their work reaches the wider world. The Researcher is built around their first-hand perspectives. Our articles are developed in close collaboration with researchers, preserving their voice, expertise and the meaning of their work.
Our role is not to impose an outside angle or turn a complex finding into a more convenient headline. It is to help researchers explain what they are investigating, what they have learned, what remains uncertain, and why anyone outside their field should care.
The researchers bring knowledge and perspective; we bring the skill that helps people connect with it.

HUMAN CRAFT

Human expertise, human craft
Our response to a world of AI-generated content is a commitment to human craft, clear authorship, and accountable communication.
We are a specialist team of writers, analysts, illustrators, designers, science communicators, public relations specialists, and social media experts. Together, we turn complex bodies of research into carefully written, beautifully designed articles that give the work room to breathe.
Our features typically cover four to six pages and that space allows us to explore the context, explain ideas and introduce the people behind them, rather than reducing everything to a headline and a few quotations.
Making research accessible should not mean stripping away its meaning. We aim for clarity through evidence but without losing the nuance through engaging storytelling.
THE SERVICE
More than a magazine
Each article is published individually, giving the research its own dedicated, shareable publication.
Articles are then brought together in editions of The Researcher magazine, introducing readers to a wider collection of work and perspectives.
But publication is only part of the service. We bring together content development, design, promotion and distribution through a structured process intended to minimise demands on researchers’ time. We work alongside university, institutional and company communications teams, not in place of them, to provide an additional publishing channel and specialist creative support to drive people back to the researchers, their organisations and the original work.
At the end of a project, we provide an impact report showing what was created, where it was published and promoted, and the reach and engagement it achieved. We distinguish between paid and organic activity and explain what the figures measure, meaning researchers have a clear guide to the success of their communications campaign.

ACCESS

Open to everyone
The Researcher is free to read. We do not carry third-party display adverts, charge readers for access, or ask them for donations.
Instead, the research teams we work with commission a professional communication service and their payment supports the work involved in developing, designing, publishing and distributing their research stories.
Where the relevant funding rules permit, this service can be paid for through research budgets allocated to communication, public outreach, dissemination or knowledge exchange. Not every research team has access to a suitable budget. Participation therefore depends on the resources available to commission the service. But reading the resulting articles and magazine does not.
This model allows us to provide researchers with specialist support while making the work openly available to the people it is intended to reach.
PURPOSE
Our purpose
We want more people to encounter research, understand its relevance and hear from the people doing it.
We want researchers to communicate beyond their own disciplines without having to become writers, designers, publishers and campaign managers themselves.
Above all, we want to make the connection between science and society more direct, more accessible and more human. That is what The Researcher exists to do.

THE TEAM
The people behind The Researcher
A research feature brings together different kinds of expertise, so the people shaping the publication work alongside the writers, analysts, illustrators, designers and communications specialists needed for each project.
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Luke Tyler
Luke leads The Researcher, bringing together its editorial direction, contributor relationships and day-to-day development. His role is to ensure that the publication works for the people reading it and the researchers taking part.
EDITORIAL MANAGER
Dr Hannah Bird
Hannah leads editorial production, helping to turn complex research into clear, compelling features. She focuses on the accuracy and accessibility of the explanation, the integrity of the researcher’s perspective and the quality of the finished article.
CREATIVE DIRECTOR
Dorian Marinescu
Dorian shapes the publication’s visual identity and design. He brings the writing, imagery and layout together so that complex material feels approachable, coherent and worth spending time with.
TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
Lorian Payne
Lorian leads the technical thinking behind the publication’s digital presence, supporting the systems through which articles are published, accessed and shared.
SOCIAL MEDIA & DISTRIBUTION
Anne Robles
Anne works on the planning, publication and reporting of social content, helping research features find audiences beyond the magazine itself. Her role connects the published work with the agreed campaign activity.
FOUNDER
Simon Jones
Simon brings 22 years of experience in the sector to the publication’s direction. His focus is on building a service that understands researchers’ needs while making their work accessible to a wider public.
